About the Library
The W. Alan Summers Municipal Library, formerly known as the Clay Public Library, is a municipally-operated public library for the City of Clay. In October 2006, Sheryl Spivey presented a plan to renovate the historic Jayfe Ware residence at 7257 Old Springville Road. The City of Clay had acquired the property in 2003 and had developed the surrounding farm into the Clay Ball Park.
The cost of renovations was paid by the city, with support from Jefferson County funds allocated by Bettye Fine Collins, and the renovations were completed in 2009.
The library opened later that year and has been a member of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative since its founding.
In 2015, the city began setting aside money to build a new facility. The library moved into its present 6,600 square-foot building, located on the original Clay Elementary site, on June 2, 2018.

A longtime resident of the 35215 area, I grew up in Roebuck before settling in Chalkville, just inside the Clay city limits, where my family has called home for over 20 years. When I'm not at the library, you'll find me lost in a good book, playing cards or board games, contra dancing with FOOTMAD Birmingham, or tackling the climbing wall — a hobby I recently picked up!
My library journey began over 20 years ago as a storyteller at the Springville Road Branch of the Birmingham Public Library. After two years there, I left to homeschool our four children, and returned to the library world in 2019 when our youngest reached high school, stepping into my current role at Clay — and taking over storytime my very first week back.
My greatest hope for every family who walks through our doors is that they feel truly welcome. I want our children's area to be a joyful space for learning — from ABCs and counting in storytime to problem-solving over puzzles. For parents, I know firsthand the pressures around reading milestones and academics, and I want to be a source of encouragement and reassurance. Most of all, I love helping families discover the right book, explore our collection and JCLC resources, and rediscover the joy of sharing stories together.
